Choquequirao, also known as Choqekiraw, considered another Inca Wonder, much like Machu Picchu due to its structural and architectural resemblance, partially excavated at 40%, has sparked interest in further recovering the complex and making it a more accessible alternative for visitors who wish to delve deeper into this great culture. Apurímac Canyon, considered the second deepest canyon in America, is a gift of nature formed over thousands of years, and it is also the habitat of the Andean Condor. An adventure only for the brave and hiking enthusiasts.

Tour details

At 6 am, we will pick you up from your hotel and depart from Cusco in our private transportation, which will take us to the town of San Pedro de Cachora (2800 meters above sea level). Here, you can make last-minute purchases for the trek before we head to the Kapuliyoq area, where our hike begins. Upon arrival, we’ll meet the rest of our travel team, including cooks, muleteers, and their horses. Along the way, you’ll witness a diverse range of landscapes representing various climates, such as the snow-capped peaks of Pedrayoc, enhancing the beauty of our journey. Today, we’ll walk for 4 to 6 hours, allowing us to admire the Apurimac River Canyon and catch the first glimpses of Choquequirao. We’ll continue descending to Chikisqa, where we’ll have lunch. This is also the place where we’ll have dinner, set up camp, and stay overnight until the next day.

After a hearty breakfast at 6:00 am surrounded by nature, we will descend towards Rosalina Beach (1550 meters above sea level). Next, we will ascend to the Santa Rosa area (2100 meters above sea level). We will have lunch in this place to regain our strength and continue our journey through these paths adorned by the beauty offered by nature. As we walk, gradually ascending towards the Marampata area (2850 meters above sea level), you’ll be able to observe the dense vegetation in the area. Finally, a flat route awaits you to reach your Sunchupata camp, where you will have dinner and spend a pleasant night.

Waking up in the Andes is a pleasure. Breakfast will be a reason to follow our instinct to seek paths towards the wildlife in Choquequirao. After following the route, we will reach the archaeological site of Choquequirao, where you will have time to enjoy breathtaking views of the deep canyons and perhaps the opportunity to see a Condor flying nearby. Later, we will walk towards the Choquequirao archaeological complex, which is an hour’s walk away, to explore the site and experience a journey through time with our guide and his mystical knowledge. After 3 hours of exploring the complex, we begin the return journey on the same path, descending towards Sunchupata, Santa Rosa, Rosalina Beach, and finally to Chikisqa, where we will have dinner and set up camp for the night.

The last Andean breakfast is the largest and most special with the sound of the river. Primarily during the early hours, adorned with hats and even the beginning, we will return by the same route to Kapuliyoc (2800 meters above sea level). On the descent, we appreciate the condors and a bit of Andean life along the route, with snow-capped mountains and, turning our heads, sharing the hiking experience. We descend on the first day, and it is a gentle climb for two hours to the Kapuliyoc Pass (2915 meters above sea level). During our journey, we will observe exotic flora and fauna, as well as views of majestic snow-capped peaks and the impressive Apurímac Canyon. After reaching Kapuliyoc, where the climbing route ends, we will have lunch. This is where we enjoy the final views of the Apurímac Valley and Choquequirao. In general, the climbing time is approximately 4 hours to reach Kapuliyoc at the end of the hike, followed by lunch. In the afternoon, we will board a car for a 3-hour journey back to Cusco. Upon arrival around 6 p.m., you will be transferred to your hotel.
